Grown-Out Warrior Cut
A men's haircutting course in which Josh Lamonaca turns a round, bulbous grown-out shape into a leaner, heavily textured haircut, somewhere between a grown-out warrior cut and a mod cut. Style and face shape consultation, a shorter front panel and a classic box section, square layers on the base in 10 sections per side, overdirection at the crown, cross-checking, a round line on the front panel, slicing through the top, a diffuser dry, the Acura thinning scissor, straighteners and Menspire matte paste.
Result and process
About the course
Grown-Out Warrior Cut is a men's haircut in which Josh Lamonaca slims down a round, bulbous grown-out shape. The length around the nape and ears stays, the fringe gets shorter and comes off the face, and the whole haircut is heavily textured, so it looks natural even without a hairdryer.
The course takes you through the whole process: the consultation and face shape, the plan with a shorter front panel and a classic box section, square layers on the base, overdirection at the crown and cross-checking, then slicing through the top, a diffuser dry and the finish. Josh Lamonaca explains what he keeps, what he removes and why.
In this course you will see
- How the consultation becomes a plan: a casual client style, a strong jaw, recession and an oval face
- A classic box section and a shorter front panel, overlapped by the length from the top
- Square layers: a diagonal first section, a straight line, the comb flat from the head, club cutting
- Overdirection from section 8, which keeps the length around the crown
- A round line on the front panel with more weight in the corners by the recession
- Slicing through the top, which reduces the weight without taking down the length
- A diffuser dry, the Acura thinning scissor, straighteners and Menspire matte paste
What you will learn
- 01How to read the client's style and face shape before you plan the haircut.
- 02How to slim down a round shape and keep the length on the external shape.
- 03How to build square layers on the base and overdirect from section 8 to protect the crown.
- 04How to cut a shorter front panel with a round line and keep weight by the recession.
- 05How to reduce the weight on top with slicing without taking down the length.
- 06How to finish with a diffuser, the Acura thinning scissor, straighteners and Menspire matte paste.

0:3601The starting point
So with his hair, you can see that it's quite bulbous at the moment.
1:3602Strong texture
So everything needs to be really textured.
2:3203Choosing the direction
Now, for this reason, we're going to work with the hair going forwards.
9:1004Comb twice, cut once
Notice how I only comb the hair twice and cut it once.
12:0605Why at the crown
that's when you start to get uneven lines in the hair.
21:1006The square line
Now, the wonderful thing about working with a square line is that it can move forwards and backwards.
22:4307A soft edge
Now, this leaves us with a very soft edge towards the haircut.
25:5408Weight, not length
So we're not taking down the length overall, we're simply reducing the mass of weight
27:3909No complete blend
We don't want to blend it completely
29:2310Natural, as at home
I want the hair to be as natural as possible.
35:1111Two parts of the scissor
Now, the reason why I'm using this one is because it has two parts.
41:3812The result
it really does come to life
